Frequently Asked Questions

While following the legal framework is essential, choosing a solemniser is also a personal decision.
The questions below cover some of the things you might be wondering about when considering a ceremony with an Entheos celebrant.

Is an Entheos ceremony legally recognised in Ireland?

Yes. Ceremonies conducted by Registered Solemnisers with Entheos Ireland are fully recognised under Irish marriage law. As long as all legal requirements are met, the marriage is legally valid in the same way as any other.

Do we need to be religious or spiritual to marry with an Entheos celebrant?

No. Entheos ceremonies are non-denominational and do not require any specific beliefs or faith. Many people who choose Entheos do not identify as religious.

Ceremonies can be entirely secular, gently spiritual, symbolic or reflective, depending on what feels right for you.

Why does the marriage notification form describe our ceremony as “religious”?

In Ireland, the term “religious” is used as a legal category for ceremonies conducted by Registered Solemnisers who are not civil registrars. This includes traditional church weddings, ceremonies from other faith traditions, and non-denominational ceremonies such as those conducted by Entheos celebrants.

The term does not necessarily describe the content, tone or beliefs of your ceremony.

What is the difference between a civil registrar ceremony and a celebrant-led ceremony?

Civil registrar ceremonies are conducted by civil registrars and are secular in nature. They usually take place Monday to Friday and must be held in a registry office or an approved venue.

Celebrant-led ceremonies are conducted by Registered Solemnisers and are legally binding in the same way. They offer greater flexibility in terms of venue, timing and ceremony structure, can take place seven days a week, and allow more freedom to personalise the content.

Can we have a completely secular ceremony with an Entheos celebrant?

Yes. Many people choose to have a fully secular ceremony with an Entheos celebrant. Others include symbolic or reflective elements. There is no required language or structure. The ceremony is shaped around you.

Can we include our own readings, rituals or cultural traditions?

Absolutely. You are encouraged to include readings, music, rituals or cultural elements that are meaningful to you, provided they meet the legal requirements of marriage.

This might include remembering loved ones who have passed, family traditions, or moments of reflection.

How do we know if an Entheos celebrant is the right fit for us?

Alongside availability and location, it can be helpful to consider how a celebrant communicates, listens and supports you through the process.

Many people choose Entheos because they want a ceremony that feels personal, inclusive and thoughtfully held, without being tied to a particular belief system.
